DIY Platform Bed

Bed frames that look nice can be extremely expensive. Sure, you can shop around and find the cheapest, barebones option for a low cost, but who wants to sully their beautiful bedroom with a bargain-basement bed frame?

Building a bed frame is a simple DIY job that is fantastic for beginners, and allows you to create a fantastic and attractive bed frame for a fraction of the price you’d pay for it in a store.

In this guide, we’re looking at platform beds. These beds have several benefits to them and offer an awesome way to get your first taste of the DIY experience. Why A Platform Bed?

There are several reasons you might want to choose to build a platform bed over some of the other options out there. We recommend taking a look at our “Build Your Own bed frame” guide if you haven’t already, as this is the place where you can get a couple of ideas on which bed frame you prefer.

Building a platform bed is substantially easier than some of the other DIY bed frame projects you might try. There are only a few parts to these bed frames and not many places where you can make mistakes. For that reason, it’s the perfect first DIY project.

Of course, you can get more complicated with the bed frame layout if you choose to. We included both simple and complex styles in our list below. Before we get into that, however, we’re going to make a case for platform beds. These are one of our favorite bed frames for several reasons and can look as good as some of the fancier styles if you build it correctly.

No Box Spring Needed

One of the best reasons to build your own platform bed is that it eliminates the need for a box spring. You can decide to design your platform with a solid piece of wood at the bottom, though most people like to go with the slat design.

Either way, your mattress will have enough support that allows you to ditch the cumbersome and expensive box spring. You can still use a box spring on a platform mattress if you want to, but it’s not necessary.

This means you save money by purchasing a mattress on its own or leave the box spring behind if you’re moving. Even the cheapest box spring will cost you upwards of $50, and there’s no reason to get one once you’ve finished building a platform bed.

More Storage Space

The added storage underneath your bed is another massive benefit that platform beds have over traditional bed frames. The designs we included in the section below have varying heights, but platform beds are almost always higher off of the ground than a standard bed frame would be. The lack of a box spring means your bed will be the same height or lower than you might be used to, but there’s a lot more room underneath for storage.

You can keep full bins of seasonal clothing, some items that don’t fit in your room, or anything else. Every homeowner knows that storage is some of the most scarce space in the house, and building a platform bed allows you to create more of it. Of course, this point isn’t universally true. You’ll see some platform beds that fit right to the ground. These beds are a bit easier to make, but we made sure to include designs that created more storage space for you.

Building is Cheaper Than Buying

Building a bed frame is always going to be cheaper than buying one, and platform beds are no different. Sure, you can find a cheap platform bed on Amazon for about $50. Such a bed frame would be excellent for someone in an apartment who wants a cheap place to sleep. Those who own a home and want to make everything look nice, though, probably don’t want this bare-bones option. Instead, you can build your own platform bed for the same price as the cheapest one you’ll find online.

It will look a whole lot nicer and can tie a room together. On top of that, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you made it yourself. As we cover a bit below, making a platform bed is an easy DIY project. It’s a great first step to becoming a handyman. Everyone needs to start somewhere.

Building your own bed frame is one of the easiest DIY jobs to complete. All you need is a few pieces of wood for the simplest forms of the bed, but they can get quite extravagant if you want them to.

There are several different styles so you can pick a platform bed that best suits your ability level and room specifications. Many of these designs allow you the freedom to dress them up how you want to as well. When it’s finished, you’ll have quite an impressive piece of furniture on your hands.

DIY jobs can be extremely difficult if you’re jumping into the deep end, but building a platform bed is one of the best projects to get you started. Now, let’s get into some of the best platform bed designs we’ve seen and tell you a bit more about them.

We found this platform bed design on Shanty 2 Chic. Like some of the other designs we’ve included, this one doesn’t include the feature of enhanced storage space. Added storage under the bed adds a bit more difficulty to the project, and not everyone is up for that. After all, you have to be confident in your ability to design and install proper legs to the bed. Adding legs isn’t overwhelmingly difficult, but it’s easier to skip this step.

This is a design for a full sized bed, though there are some dimension modifications in the comments you can refer to for advice on larger pieces. The setup is as basic as it comes, and even includes a headboard – which a lot of others do not.

Those who want to take baby steps and skip the glitz and glamor should take a look at the Cheap, Easy, Low-Waste Platform Bed on Instructables.com. This bed could not be simpler to arrange and doesn’t look half bad when it’s done. Once you add the finish to the project, you’ll start to see it come together.

This bed is high-rise as well which is a benefit for multiple reasons. First, it will be close to the same height as a bed you might be used to that requires a box spring. The second – and arguably more important – benefit is that you can store all kinds of things underneath the bed.

This project is a perfect one for beginners. Although it fits a queen bed, you can scale-down the measurements and complete the job with your child. They’ll feel all the more satisfied when they lay down for the evening if they know they made their bed frame with their bare hands.

Platform Bed With Extra Storage

This platform bed design looks a bit more difficult to create than it is. The original outline on Chatfield Court shows some wheels on the bottom of the bed. These aren’t difficult to add at all, but you can always skip this step or add some legs in their place.

This design skips the slats and opts for a solid base, with a space in the middle that allows you to store extra blankets, clothes, pillows, or anything you like. As you can see from the pictures in the tutorial, you can even find some small baskets to store some trinkets and add to the aesthetic.

Platform Bed With Extra Storage

We included this platform bed design for the more skilled craftsman out there who want to challenge themselves a bit. Most of the other designs we included were bare-bones, but this one involves pocket-hole joinery along with a couple of other more advanced building concepts.

This bed includes five wide legs – one in the center for added support – and a single piece of wood as the center rather than multiple slats. The tutorial on DIY Network will walk you through the process, but you should probably have a bit of existing knowledge before tackling this one.

King Palette Platform Bed

The King Palette Platform bed frame from Made 4 Decor is one of the more unique styles we’ve seen. It also happens to be one of the simplest ones to recreate. You might have some trouble finding pallets that exactly match the specifications of your bed, but you can always build your own if you want to take that route. Once you have your pallets, all you have to do is build some additional support, add a finish, and you’re good to go.

The palette design might not be for everyone, but it makes for an easy, and unique bed frame idea we’ve doubt you’ve seen at anyone else’s house.
